Jerry Monica, Executive Director of local Habitat for Humanity, addresses the club.

Jerry cleared up some myths about this organization which was begun by Millard Fuller in 1976.  He said perhaps the most prevalent being “we give away houses.”  The organization, he insists, builds and sells houses to those who are willing to earn them and pay with their labor and resources for them.   He noted that the newest thrust of this ministry is to focus more on the people who live in these homes, than simply build them.  The national average for affordable housing for counties the size of McHenry is 12.5%; this county only offers 4.9%.   He closed by emphasizing Habitat is supported heavily by volunteers and noted there are many areas for people to serve to help provide affordable housing in this area.  Mr. Monica was the guest speaker at our regular meeting, February 7th, and may be contacted at 815-451-7930.  The Reel editor, Don Tonyan would probably describe those who braved the weather to attend as truly offering: "SERVICE ABOVE SLEET!"
