On June 5, a group of Rotarians and their family members traveled to the northwest suburbs to participate in a project to package over 7000 meals for hungry children and their families in the impoverished villages and cities in Nicaragua.  The meals are part of the program "Kids Against Hunger" which has approximately 100 similar sites serving people around the world.  The nutrient enhanced rice casserole is made with a flavored nutrient base, rice, soy and dehydrated vegetables and is sealed in airtight bags with a shelf life of several years.  The cost per meal is 25 cents, each bag has 6 meals which is cooked by adding water which boils for 20 minutes (also killing water borne impurities). The Rotary Club of McHenry donated $ 1800 to purchase and package a pallet of meals. Part of the costs helps pay for the distribution of the meals to orphanages and missions assisting the needy in Nicaragua.
